Pickled Spider

07.29.2010

We have been playing this monster from Mr. Scruff and Kirsty Almeida for weeks now. And we’re still not tired of it. Wobbly bass and dubbed out sounds and chants the way we definitely like it. Now there’s a video made for this single. The Mr. Scruff visuals like you can see them at his gigs. Lots of goofy nonsense but oh so effective. Would love to see the Mancunian again in one of the months to come.

Check Kirsty’s site for the original of this tune, by the way.

This week we give you a little mix to get you prepared for Brussels Soul Weekender and we have a chat with JtotheC about his gig at the Bruksellive festival. Events we’ll be playing at ourselves, by the way. On top of that we give you a lot of new tracks from Paul White, Beautiful Swimmers, Tyree Cooper, Doc Daneeka, Lone and I:Cube.

Oh, and our apologies for the skipping needle. Some people like to use decks as place-mats for their CD-maps. Those people need to be bitchslapped.

Next Weekend

07.26.2010

After a couple of weeks of silence the Onda Sonora Soundsystem will be back behind decks next weekend. We’ll even play every day of it to celebrate that return. Haha. We’ll start on Friday evening at Bar Du Matin where we will play at the Brussels Soul Weekender.  Always an immensely nice event and now at a our favourite bar in town. We’ll close the weekend at that same party on Sunday, by the way.

In between we’ll play at the Bruksellive festival. We’ll do the opening set on the main stage and one on the Brussels Jupiler stage. Making the switch between the dreamy vibes of the Isbells and the banging beats of our friends from 54Kolaktiv. Looking forward to that.

Exact times:
Friday | Brussels Soul Weekender | 12pm – 1am
Saturday | Bruksellive | 3pm – 4pm (main stage)
Saturday | Bruksellive | 11:15pm – 1am (Jupiler stage)
Sunday | Brussels Soul Weekender | 7pm – 8pm

Both Brussels Soul Weekender and Bruksellive are free events.

If you want an Onda Sonora t-shirt then come and find us at these events. We’ll have some with us. To be sure we’ll have your size, mail us.

Roy Ayers Interview Video

07.21.2010

Our good friend and valued member of the Onda Sonora family Karl filmed during the radio show we did with mr. Roy Ayers as our guest a couple of weeks ago. After clearing up the troubles that  occured while transfering the footage to the computer he pieced it all back together and the result you can watch above this post. Big up to Karl for this.

Dlux Photograpy

07.20.2010

We don’t say it enough but this year we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary. We’ll do it properly on October 30th at OUR PARTY (special guest Phil Asher) and we’ve got some other things lined up for y’all to enjoy the experience we’ve built up all those years.

Apart from the fact that we’re still going strong and still are doing it with all of our heart, there’s more we’re proud of. Like being true pioneers. We were upfront booking artists (Red Astaire (2005), Trus’me (2008), Benji B (2008),…), hosting them way before the more established venues in Belgium even noticed them. More than often a bit too ahead for our own good we must admit. On the national tip Red D (& Lady Linn) and Lefto were practically residents at one point. Way before they got the (inter)national fame (we booked them both for the first time in 2004).

But the thing we’re most proud of is that we’ve inspired a few people to be creative. Some became DJ, some started organising parties themselves, some took their hobby to the next level. Our ‘in house’ photographer of the first couple of years, Dlux, captured many of the finer moments at our parties at JH Eenders (see pics in the middle of this post). Something for which we are most grateful. Even in those pictures, taken with a simple compact camera, you see his talent. His photos are far better than the ones we took ourselves and even beat the competition of the more professional ones we’ve got.

It’s nice to see he’s still doing what he did back then. Stepping up his game a few notches but still capturing the party vibe. Check out his Flickr account to see his oeuvre. The series he took at 10DaysOff with Red D and Kerri Chandler brings back together a few key players of the Onda Sonora years at JH Eenders, by the way. We’re glad we have helped him getting this far.

Big up to David.

No Radio Show Tonight

07.20.2010

Tonight you won’t find us on fm brussel between 10 and 11pm as our radio station is covering the Bal National concerts. We’re sorry we can’t provide you your weekly dose of goodness but we’ll try to upload a mix later this week on our Mixcloud. Next week we’ll be back with lots of fresh music.

Some Music We Recommend

07.16.2010

Although I feel 2010 isn’t as strong as the precious years when it comes to new Music, there’s still lots of good stuff available in the shops. Let me give you a little roundup of current releases we like at the Onda Sonora HQ.

Blackjoy – Erotis – Blackjoy
We’ve been playing ‘Untitled’ (on Freerange), ‘Jump, Stomp & Twist’ (on Supra) and certainly the Restless Soul mix of ‘Metalbossa’ when they came out. So it was a pleasant surprise to find their new album in our mailbox. Big up to the management for that. Certainly because it’s a good longplayer. A fresh take on Disco from people who have looked beyond the clichés. With a more ‘live’ approach to making music than most makers of dance music have, it reminds me a bit of Trus’me’s last one. Maybe a tad more to the pop side. Which is refreshing in a time when everyone seems to go for ultimate deepness or bland formulaic overproducing. This chooses a path in between. A path I appreciate. Really nice effort.

I:Cube – Mérovingienne – Versatile
More music from the country just South of Belgium. This man should need no introduction (if you don’t know him get yourself schooled urgently). This is a 3-track EP with quality moody deepness. References to Detroit are all too easy. For me this is true French House. The kind Pépé Bradock also makes. Seriously edgy but at the same time banging hard.

Jimmy Edgar – Hot, Raw, Sex EP – K7!
Jimmy Edgar – Hush EP – Glasstable

Two EPs bringing you House music with a heavy nod to Electro (the one originated by Bambaataa and Arthur Baker). Midtempo burners to moody uptempo stuff. Check out all this man’s releases. Definitely worth it. And the Hush EP has one of the few Kyle Hall cuts on it I really dig. For that alone it’s worth mentioning.

Various – Tokyo Connection EP – Yore
Three Japanese cats with a firm Detroit House fixation. But who cares where people are from or have taken their inspiration as long as it’s good. This release certainly qualifies as that. I’ve been a Rondenion fan for a while now and I’ve been wondering where this No Milk dude was from. Kez Ym is new to me but he sure knows how to craft a warm yet banging tune. Nice one from Yore.

Various – The Defenders Of The Deep House World – Third Ear
Probably the most corny title they could think of but luckily the music on the EP is way better than the name of it. A selection of Detroit House greats (Rick Wade, Rick Wilhite, Norm Talley and Mike Huckaby) delivering what you have come to expect from them. Like lots of Fender Rhodes. Deep House indeed but far from bland. I could listen to this kind of music for days on end.

Some Free Music

07.16.2010

Mr. Beatnick doing a Wiley
If you don’t get that expression read this first. We’ve been making noise about this friendly London based producer since the first blog we had (the pink and brown one, remember ?). Some of the more on point types among you might have grabbed a few of the tunes in this package already. On the net or on vinyl. But even for us there are a few we’ve missed. Like that Marvin Gaye edit. Big up to Nick and get his new releases when they come out.

Cuthead – City Slicker
Don’t know much about this German producer. San Soda recommended me this and I can only do the same. You’ll find the link to his free album somewhere on his myspace. Expect House and Hiphop beats.

Amy Winhouse – Love Is A Losing Game (Dobie Remix)
Dobie is a London legend but above all a quality producer. Doesn’t need to prove himself anymore but does so nicely with this killer remix.

New T-Shirts

07.13.2010

It took us a while but finally they’ve arrived. Our new t-shirts. Simple white print on a black t-shirt. Basic models for both sexes. A bit converse-styled apparently. It has a hint of vintage sportswear logo’s that’s true. It’s simple and strong. At least that’s what we’ve aimed for.

Of course we sell them. To fund the many wild projects we embark upon. Meaning you’ll support us in many ways when buying and wearing them. You’ll spread our name and give us the chance to make our wild plans happen. And you’ll look mighty fly of course.

They cost 15 €. Which is a bargain, for sure. We’ve got them in all the usual sizes. Females from XS to L, Males from M to XXL. Needless to say they come in limited amounts. So be quick.

We prefer to sell them in real life. Makes it all the more simple for us. If you want one and you can meet us at one of the following spots, we’ll be able to make the transaction swiftly;

16/07 – Café Merlo, Brussels
30/07 – Bar Du Matin (Brussels Soul Weekender)
31/07 – Bruksellive festival
01/08 – Bar Du Matin (Brussels Soul Weekender)

We’ll announce on our many social accounts the places we’ll be in the weeks to come.

If meeting us in the short term is impossible than we’ll send them to you for the little extra cost that the mail will charge us. So for the people living far away. Let us know what you need and we’ll find out how much extra we’ll have to charge and contact you about it before sending.

And we’ve got t-shirts left from previous sales. All good as new, but not in all sizes. If you want one, they cost 5€. We’ve got some left of our ‘Love Saves The Day’ series and some from the previous blue batch. See pictures just above.

So mail us if you want one. Make sure to include the amount and size(s) you need and how / where you want to arrange the transaction. And if you want some of the older series.
