Onda Sonora Picks Week 3.
Because we play before and after the Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids concert on Wednesday at Ancienne Belgique we serve you some spiritual afro-jazz and related music.
Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids – We All Be Africans – Strut
Title track from their last album out on the ever impeccable Strut Records. This alone makes the trip to AB well worth the effort but the man and his group got plenty more to offer otherwise Gilles Peterson doesn’t present you a Lifetime Achievement Award at his Worldwide Awards
Bajka – The Only Religion That I Believe – Jazzman
Bajka sings on “We All Be Africans” and the album is recorded in the producer of this song, Max Weissenfeldt’s analogue Philophon studio. Perfect excuse to include this old favourite of ours.
Marcus Belgrave – Space Oddysey – Tribe / Universal Sound
We admit we’ve discovered this through Carl Craig’s Detroit Experiment, of which Marcus Belgrave was part, but we love the original better. Less polished, rawer. Reissued a decade ago by Soul Jazz’ sublabel Universal Sound.
Archie Shepp – Song For Mozambique – Black Saint
Classic. Stop doing whatever you’re doing an absorb this properly.
Pharaoh Sanders – You’ve Got To Have Freedom – Theresa
Covered by Build An Ark, a group we’ll certainly include in our set on Wednesday, here in its original version.
